Commander
Seventeenth Coast Guard District
Juneau, Alaska, 99802-5517
31 October 2016

Dear Peter Mott,

Please accept my sincerest appreciation for your assistance in relaying communications between the Seventeenth Coast Guard District's command center and the sailing vessel RAFIKI.

On 27 September 2016, when you heard the distress call from the S/V RAFIKI, you provided invaluable information about the nature of distress and location of the S/V RAFIKI enabling the command center to direct a Coast Guard MH-60 helicopter and an HC-130 aircraft out of Kodiak, Alaska to provide assistance.  At one point you were the only means of communication between the vessel and the Coast Guard.

Your assistance allowed the HC-130 to quickly arrive on-scene, which enabled the Coast Guard to provide critical survival gear to the sailing vessel.  The helicopter was then able to successfully hoist the two survivors from the vessel before it sank.

The selfless assistance that you provided directly contributed to the saving of two lives.  Thank you again for your critical help.

Sincerely

M.F. McAllister
Rear Admiral, U.S. Coast Guard
